Preapproval before house shopping.

A conversation before you shop can help you understand your budget and the steps ahead. You can start before you have chosen a property.

01

Ask what has been reviewed

Lenders use prequalification and preapproval differently. Ask whether the letter relies on information you supplied or documents and credit that have been reviewed, how long it is valid, and which conditions remain.

02

Prepare through a secure process

Your loan officer will tell you which income, employment, and asset records apply to you. Use the secure application and upload instructions provided. Discuss the credit review and any required authorization before it happens.

03

Keep the full payment in view

Consider the loan payment, property taxes, insurance, mortgage insurance if needed, and other housing costs. A letter is useful planning information; final approval still depends on the remaining review, the property, and applicable requirements.

Ask: “What has been verified, what is still needed, and what should I do before making an offer?”
