Healthy credit starts with everyday habits.

Credit is one part of a mortgage review, not a measure of your worth. Give yourself time to understand your reports and ask about anything unfamiliar.

01

Make payments on time

A consistent payment history matters. Reminders or automatic payments can help, as long as you check that enough money is available.

02

Give balances breathing room

Using less of your available revolving credit can help. You do not need to carry interest-bearing debt to build a credit history.

03

Check before big changes

Review credit reports for errors and dispute inaccurate information. Before opening accounts, financing a car, or closing older accounts during a mortgage application, discuss the possible effects with your loan officer.

There is no guaranteed score increase or universal approval score. A credit app’s score may differ from the score a mortgage lender uses.
